Capella Ubud, Bali

A luxurious tented camp in Ubud
VERIFIED LUXURY

Minimalism might be in, but superstar interior designer Bill Bensley has no qualms about turning up the décor to maximum at Capella Ubud, Bali. Sloped on a jungle ravine in Bali's cultural and creative heart, the luxury tented lodge is a wacky window into a bygone era. Bensley is the mastermind behind this contemporary early settlers’ camp, which features 23 Dutch-colonial-inspired tents decorated to a theme. Discover traditional Balinese baking utensils adorning the Baker's Tent and film paraphernalia in the Photographer's lodgings.

There's a real sense of playfulness about this property, from the 30-meter-long above-ground rainforest pool to the branded sidecar at the entrance. But it also feels exceptionally private. Each tent has a large terrace with daybed, private saltwater plunge pool and indoor and outdoor showers for nature bathing. And with a rotation of jungle-inspired guided group yoga and fitness classes on offer, there’s plenty to do outside of your tent as well.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • The campsite's revolutionary design is exquisite. Vibrant batik lines the walls of the canvas tents and forms canopies overhead; rain shower heads are fashioned into giant flowers; and the refreshment trunk is upholstered in cow hide.
  • Complimentary coffee, afternoon tea and cocktails, complete with cheese and pastries, are offered daily in the camp living room or the Officer's Tent. Books and board games are also available.
  • No need to fret about the elements at the Ubud hotel. Upon check-in, you are given a camp survival kit with sunscreen, insect repellent, aromatherapy oil and a camp map.
  • Wellness is inclusive rather than an additional expense, and the camp has a weekly schedule of activities, including rice paddy walks and mountain biking.
  • The camp's Auriga Spa occupies three canvas spa tents and offers unique treatments dedicated to the phases of the moon. The Full Moon massages involves energy work and gentle massage techniques.

Things to Know

  • If you are rooming with someone, you should be aware of the toilet situation. The imposing throne (yes, it's literally a throne) sits alongside an impressive copper standalone bathtub. But it's virtually exposed, save for the thin pull-around curtain.
  • Staying at the Bali hotel requires some level of fitness, the tents are staggered down the hillside and getting around can be a decent workout. The Toy Maker's and Baker's tents are closest to reception, while the Photographer’s Tent has the best views.
  • Remarkably, no tree was cut during construction of the hotel, and its location within the Balinese artist village of Keliki allows for unique cultural visits.

The Rooms

  • You won't have to sacrifice comforts in the tents, which come equipped with Wi-Fi access and air conditioning.
  • The in-room refreshment trunk is stocked with complimentary Bintang beers and housemade snacks, including cookies.
  • A 24-hour “Culturalist” (essentially, a personal assistant) is assigned to each tent and he carries a walking staff to help guests manage the terrain at the luxury camp.

The Restaurants

  • There's no room for fussy eaters at the 16-seat, omakase-style Api Jiwa. The Asian barbecue dining experience unfolds over 10 inventive courses and includes drinks pairings, such as coconut wine.
  • Room service is a highlight, with meals carried to the tent in tiffin boxes and presented by your Culturalist on the private terrace.
  • Breakfast is a sun-soaked affair in split-level tented dining room Mad's Lange. Choose from charcuterie, cheese, pastries and Balinese-inspired daily specials, such as babi guling (roasted pig) hash browns.
