Umana Bali, LXR Hotels & Resorts

Bali's all-villa clifftop beauty
VERIFIED LUXURY

Bali’s extraordinary natural beauty and singular culture shine at Umana Bali, LXR Hotels & Resorts.

The all-villa luxury resort, which debuted in late 2023, sprawls across a 230-foot-high cliff on the sparkling southern coast of the island. You can appreciate the sorbet skies produced by awe-inspiring sunrises and sunsets, as well as a wide stretch of aquamarine Indian Ocean and Melasti Beach.

Across the undulating topography of the property lush with mature tropical vegetation, 72 villas were designed by WATG and Wimberly Interiors for the utmost privacy and pampering. (Don’t skip a spa visit for more of that.) Each has its own infinity pool, jetted hot tub, two automated Toto toilets, large bathtub, plus an indoor and outdoor shower.

The resort’s photogenic architecture draws inspiration from a core Balinese concept and in many ways acts as a celebration of what makes the isle so special. Thoughtfully sourced culinary offerings reflect that, too, and flavorful Balinese and Indonesian specialties are served alongside mouthwatering Western fare at the handful of distinctive restaurants.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • The resort’s villas are among Bali’s most generous: the base-level one-bedrooms are 4,300 square feet with a 33-foot pool and an alfresco lounge, while the three-bedroom accommodations occupy 13,000 square feet and include private spa and entertainment rooms. The vibe and palette are calming, with details that riff off Balinese motifs and homey amenities like a Bluetooth speaker and silky robes and slippers.
  • Umana was formerly a Banyan Tree resort, but it underwent a thorough reimagining. WATG looked to the concept of Tri Hita Karana — which speaks to achieving harmony through healthy relationships with nature, the community and the gods — to inspire the design. The new lobby features elements drawn from legong dancers, sacred banyan trees and indigenous Bali Aga people.
  • The Bali hotel does a wonderful job of creating romance for couples or honeymooners — in-villa barbecues and dinners with a bird’s-eye beach view at Oliverra are a must — while also catering to and taking beautiful care of families. The Kids Club is particularly exciting for little ones thanks to its hot air balloon slide descending into a ball pit plus dynamic programming.
  • Meaningful curated experiences help you tap into the local culture. They include a 90-minute walk through a local village and two ornate temples, purifying Hindu ceremonies and hands-on Balinese cooking classes, which are good for multi-generational families.
  • Balinese massages are legendary around the world, and the treatments at Lohma Spa more than live up to the hype. The Tri Hita Karana Journey is a four-hour head-to-toe extravaganza that guarantees bliss, while the same can be said of the dreamy sound baths.

The Restaurants

  • Breakfast cannot be missed, as it’s a delicious-looking spread that is worth taking your time to enjoy. Served in Commune restaurant, the morning feast is a blend of comprehensive buffet and unlimited à la carte menu featuring hyper-local specialties alongside decadent treats, like baby lobster, caviar and truffle-accented eggs.
  • On clear nights, there’s no better place to be before the sun dips below the ocean than The Veranda at Oliverra for a Mediterranean-inflected cocktail (such as the Oliverra spritz with burnt rosemary) that matches the sky. Friendly staff at the restaurant downstairs serves up light, bright dishes — think Indonesian-made artisanal burrata with ultra-juicy tomatoes and local lobster tortellini — alongside details on where the kitchen sourced the ingredients. Wrap up with the Grand Marnier soufflé.
  • Quick ready-made bites and scrumptious desserts can be found at the luxury hotel’s Mer Lounge, but the lobby café is also the site of a wine cellar where you can book a charcuterie-paired Balinese wine tasting or Indonesian coffee tasting.
