Built in 1969, The Murray, Hong Kong, a Niccolo Hotel's building was already ahead of its time. At the hands of British modernist architect Ron Phillips, the energy-efficient structure featured a distinct white facade with three-story arches and recessed square windows designed to minimize direct sunlight.

After serving as a government building for more than four decades, Foster and Partners was called upon to spearhead an ambitious revitalization project that transformed the office tower into a luxurious hotel.

During the four-year process, the respected architectural firm retained the structure’s character and most distinctive design elements. The refurbished interiors combine Italian marble with minimalist gold accents, clean lines and an enviable art collection.

In addition to the 336 spacious rooms and suites, there are also ample services and facilities, from an indoor pool to sophisticated restaurants, a rooftop bar and a relaxing spa. No matter where you find yourself in the hotel, you’ll enjoy incredible views of the city skyline, lush Hong Kong Park and St. John’s Cathedral.

Our Inspector's Highlights

All from the owner’s private collection, the hotel’s art is worth swooning over, from two charcoal installations by Seoul-based artist Bahk Seon-ghi to the oversized Awilda’s White Head sculpture by Jaume Plensa.
The mammoth architectural project incorporated aspects of the old structure in surprising ways. For example, an angled driveway that once led into the former parking lot has been converted into a versatile events venue.
There’s greenery everywhere, including the property’s own registered “Old and Valuable Tree,” a century-old indochinensis that’s been given its own plot in the center of the driveway.
One of The Murray’s major highlights is a rooftop bar and restaurant dubbed Popinjays. Named after the cockatoos that still roam around adjacent Garden Road, the 26th-floor address provides panoramic vistas of Hong Kong’s skyscrapers and green mountains.
The luxury hotel’s team of culinary experts is available to provide bespoke menus throughout your stay, which can then be arranged for room service or at the restaurants.

Things to Know

Across the street in Hong Kong Park, nature lovers will adore the enchanting Edward Youde Aviary (housing 70 species of birds), botanical gardens, zoo and the Flagstaff House Museum of Tea Ware.
Though cozy with just five treatment suites — two of which house in-room saunas — the beautiful spa provides a relaxing afternoon away from the chaos of the city.
The hotel’s closest MTR (Mass Transit Railway) station is Central, but it’s still a 10- to 15-minute walk from your room. Alternatively, taxis are a dime a dozen.
If you prefer an in-room check-in, simply let the hotel know before your arrival. Staff will escort you to your room for a private experience at no extra charge.

The Rooms

The rooms at The Murray are among the most spacious in Hong Kong, beginning at 409 square feet and stretching up to the 2,422-square-foot Murray Suite.
The design is both glamorous and cosmopolitan, thanks to white marble bathrooms, bronze accents, splashes of green and plush textiles.
All N2 Grand rooms and above include a standalone white bathtub and a powerful rain shower, which you’ll appreciate after a day of exploring Hong Kong. You can expect smart Japanese toilets, as well as organic and chemical-free products from Australian brand Grown Alchemist.
The hotel’s biggest accommodation, The Murray Suite, includes a private exercise room, a dining room, a lounge, walk-in closets and a massive bathroom.
Every room comes with a pillow menu, complete with 17 options, from an ache-no-more support pillow to buckwheat, contour, light foam and even a Japanese tea-leaf option that’s meant to boost your immune system.

Savor modern bistro fare at The Tai Pan. The cozy dining destination offers gourmet experience with gueridon service, with everything from premium meats to salmon carvery conducted tableside.
Set in a two-story pavilion outside of the hotel main building, MIÁN integrates the essence of the eight great regional cuisines of China in its menu.
