Downtown L.A. Proper Hotel

Spanish Colonial meets California cool
VERIFIED LUXURY

Built as a private club in 1926 and a stunning example of California Renaissance Revival architecture, Downtown L.A. Proper Hotel pays tribute to legendary designer Kelly Wearstler’s eye for detail. It’s a visual feast with surprising features to uncover, like hidden messages in the art and original monogrammed doorknobs. The hotel’s maximalist design nods to the city’s Spanish and Mexican influences — Abel Macias’ vibrant lobby mural sets the tone — while blending California contemporary design with vintage furnishings, rugs, tiles and fabrics from Turkey, Mexico and Morocco.

Although it carries an intimate vibe, the 147-room downtown L.A. hotel is flush with perks, including two popular restaurants, three sceney bars, a rooftop pool, fitness facilities and an elegant ballroom worthy of Greta Garbo. Simple and modern, each room boasts Aesop amenities, Parachute robes and unique configurations, furnishings and Mexican artwork — ensuring no two stays are alike.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • Cara Cara, the casual rooftop spot, and Caldo Verde, the all-day, ground-floor eatery, are the first hotel restaurants by L.A. culinary icons chef Suzanne Goin and restaurateur Caroline Styne. Goin’s famous lemon chicken makes an appearance on both menus.
  • Don’t miss a dip in the petite, checkerboard-tiled rooftop pool while taking in the city skyline. Order a mezcal margarita to complete the glamorous experience.
  • The Los Angeles hotel's central location allows for walk-friendly outings to the Fashion District, the Crypto Arena, Grammy Museum and The Theatre at the Ace Hotel.
  • One of the only hotels in the world to have a suite with an in-room pool, Downtown L.A. Proper offers the unforgettable Pool Suite. It features a 35-foot heated pool framed by a mammoth Ben Medansky tiled wall, a kitchen, a dining room, a bedroom and fittingly, flamingo floaties.
  • This is a hotel for design lovers. Wearstler incorporated Spanish, Portuguese, Mexican and Moroccan design; vintage furniture and rugs; and more than 100 different kinds of tile, from hand-painted to custom commissioned, to give the property a one-of-a-kind look.

Things to Know

  • Ideal for a date spot, the Palo Verde tree-adorned rooftop lounge has secret tables on the lower level shrouded in greenery. Stop by during sunset to watch the surrounding buildings sparkle as they reflect the sinking sun.
  • Channel your inner Gatsby and stop in at Dahlia — the DTLA hotel’s 18-seat speakeasy awash in coral hues and art deco accents — for a glamorous start or end to an evening.
  • Request westward-facing rooms from the seventh floor and above for the best views.
  • The luxury hotel has Teslas available for rent during your stay.
