The Chedi Muscat

A modern Arabian oasis
VERIFIED LUXURY

At the end of a long, private drive in the residential Al Ghubra neighborhood, palm trees, arches and a crisp white exterior welcome you to The Chedi Muscat. The chic, contemporary Arabian design of the facade gives way to a dramatic central lobby, evocative of an ornate desert tent hung with hundreds of Moroccan lanterns. Slatted wooden louvers offer a peek of the gardens and sea beyond.

Noted French architect Jean-Michel Gathy spent months exploring traditional buildings around the country to develop authentically local design elements. The result is a modern and distinctly Omani masterpiece.

This sophisticated East-meets-West sensibility permeates everything from the striking yet understated suites to the immaculately manicured lawns and water gardens to the world-class spa and onsite restaurants, which feature some of the best wine lists in the country.

With three pools, six dining venues and a slender strip of private beach, the oceanfront property feels like an exclusive enclave, which is exactly what it is.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • The 38 elegantly designed villa-style suites boast towering ceilings, sleek lines, oversized living rooms and incredible bathrooms featuring sunken tubs, separate rain showers and dual vanities. They also include access to private gardens and an exclusive club lounge, as well as complimentary limousine airport transfers, an in-room bar and in-suite breakfast.
  • The oceanfront Beach Restaurant is arguably one of the only fine-dining restaurants in Oman, featuring local seafood prepared using modern French techniques. It can be difficult to get a reservation even if you are staying on property, so be sure to request a table when booking your room.
  • The luxury hotel is a great example of modern Omani design, often compared to the iconic Royal Opera House Muscat. The structure’s overall effect is one of pure tranquility with a sense of place.
  • The property is home to the largest spa in the country, which offers a laundry list of treatments ranging from Balinese massage to Ayurvedic rituals. You’ll want to spend some time in the relaxation room with its dramatic glass wall overlooking the sea.
  • The beach views are best from the oceanfront Chedi Pool and the eye-catching infinity Long Pool, both of which are quieter than the family-friendly Serai Pool.

Things to Know

  • To really soak up the open-air design of the property (and its excellent Beach Restaurant), it is best to visit during the cooler months, from November to April.
  • No alcohol is served during the month of Ramadan, so check the dates before you book if you’re planning to imbibe.
  • The hotel rooms in the main building tend to attract larger families. For a serene, romantic trip, stick to the secluded suites — located around their own private gardens — and the club rooms, which offer access to a private club lounge featuring a double-height library and complimentary cocktail and tea service.

The Rooms

  • The boutique hotel offers 120 guest rooms and 38 suites set on 21 acres of beachfront gardens. All rooms come with Bose Wave music systems and flat-screen televisions.
  • The minimalist décor of the accommodations allows the architectural details and stunning views to take center stage.
  • Sea vistas are in short supply, however, the property was designed to maximize the feeling of privacy with courtyard views of winding fountain-filled gardens that do not disappoint.

The Restaurants
  • A generous hot breakfast of European and Arabic options, like eggs and toast or ful medames (spiced fava beans) is included with your stay at the Muscat hotel. Take your morning meal indoors or alfresco at all-day dining establishment The Restaurant, or in the comfort of your suite.
  • In the evenings, couches surrounding the Long Pool transform into an open-air lounge where you can enjoy soft music, cocktails and Asian-inspired small bites — like sushi and gyozas(pork wontons) — under the stars.
  • For seafood-focused fine dining and remarkable ocean vistas, make a reservation at the resort’s popular Beach Restaurant. Succulent menu highlights include local oysters, Iranian caviar and indulgent lobster, prawn and kingfish linguine dressed in caviar cream and white truffle oil, as well as one of the largest wine cellars in the country.
  • Built directly on the sand, Beach Restaurant is entirely open with slatted mahogany partitions dividing the space without inhibiting the sea views. As such, the venue is only open seasonally, closing in the hot summer months.
  • Other dining and drinking options are tucked around the property, from a semi-hidden cocktail and mocktail lounge in a library-like space just off the lobby, to The Shisha Courtyard, which appears in the garden in the evenings.
