Halekulani Okinawa

A serene stay by the emerald sea
VERIFIED LUXURY

Halekulani Okinawa stretches nearly a mile down the coast of central Okinawa, where magnificent white sand seems to glow through crystalline waters. The second outpost of Hawaii’s Halekulani brand, the Okinawa property is a kingdom of subtropical paradise that blends into the landscape of Kaigan Quasi-National Park.

Beyond the gates is Onna Village, one of the leading sightseeing areas of the island. Here, you can enjoy the best of both worlds: easy access to local tourist attractions and a tranquil escape.

The greatest part of this July 2019-opened retreat, however, might be the way it makes time stand still with long, quiet halls that have a touch of art, trails that wind through lush green foliage and the use of water as a centerpiece.

Every guest accommodation, along with the fitness center and prestigious spa, boasts a view of the East China Sea. Outside, fountains trickle a soft tune and several pools and natural hot springs offer a chance to be immersed in utter calm.

From the enormous doors that reach the sky-high ceilings to the expansive lobbies with an entire wall that opens to let in the ocean breeze, everything at Halekulani Okinawa seems to suggest one thing: this is heaven on earth.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • Three of the five pools at the Okinawa hotel are infinity pools. One is embellished with 1.5 million mosaic tiles in the shape of a cattleya orchid (which is twice the size as the one outside Waikiki’s Halekulani).
  • For added privacy, opt for the spacious five villas, each of which has its own heated pool and onsen, a bath with natural hot springs.
  • SpaHalekulani uses a combination of folk remedies from the ancient Ryukyu Kingdom, which ruled Okinawa from the 15th to 19th centuries, and traditional Hawaiian treatments.
  • The Sunset Wing has the best view of Okinawa’s famous orange and purple nightfall, but the ocean scenery is better in the Beachfront Wing.
  • There are performances, like Hawaiian and jazz music, every night by the Orchid Pool.

Things to Know

  • There’s a large selection of cultural classes, diving and snorkeling tours, cruises and more available for guests. For a one-of-a-kind outing, witness the island’s famed fireflies light up the forest (July through September). Just ask the front desk upon check-in.
  • The Beachfront Wing is very popular among families. So, if you’re seeking absolute peace and quiet, choose the Sunset Wing.
  • Guests who stay in the villas or Premier Club Ocean Front accommodations get access to the Club Lounge, which serves afternoon tea, cocktails and snacks and does check-in and checkout.

The Rooms

  • All 308 standard rooms (which have 538 square feet) and 47 suites (818 to 3,164 square feet) are equipped with large sliding glass doors that lead to a private balcony overlooking the emerald sea.
  • The interiors were done by the world-renowned Champalimaud Design, which chose to use minimalistic décor and just seven shades of white for the color scheme. This allows the ocean to take centerstage.
  • Every guest accommodation at the luxury hotel features a large soaking tub that sits in front of a wall window that faces the view.

The Restaurants

  • House Without A Key offers all-day dining with an array of food, from eggs, sushi, fresh local fruits and pastries for breakfast to local and Hawaiian favorites like Okinawa soba with pork ribs and traditional ahi poke for dinner. Don't miss the restaurant’s coconut cake, which has been a favorite at the Hawaii property for more than 60 years.
  • Shiroux, led by star Tokyo chef Hiroyasu Kawate, melds French cuisine with traditional Japanese ingredients.
  • Kingdom serves large steaks and a wide selection of wine.
  • Aomi puts an innovative spin on traditional Japanese cuisine made from fresh local ingredients.
  • Catch the breathtaking Okinawa sunset from Bar Spectra with one of Halekulani’s potent signature mai tais.
