Amerikalinjen

An NYC-themed haven in Norway
VERIFIED LUXURY

Take a trip to Oslo for the opera, shopping in Kvadraturen, a good time in Youngstorget and stay at Amerikalinjen, a New York City-themed hotel right in the middle of it all.

The stately neo-baroque building opened in 1919 as the headquarters for the Norweigan America Line, a former cargo and ocean liner company, but today has been reimagined into an elegant hotel. Amerikalinjen’s style tips a hat to American culture, namely the great jazz age, old Hollywood glam and the comfort of a cold Coca-Cola. It offers a basement jazz club inspired by such places in New York and festive jazz brunches.

The name of the property comes from the ship line that sailed to New York and transported Norwegian emigrants to the United States. Now the hotel aims to come full circle, inviting visitors from around the world to settle in Oslo and see what Norway has to offer and celebrating the link between the two cities.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • Reserve the floating bartender experience if you’re staying in either the superior or deluxe rooms or one of the Fortuna suites. For 30 minutes, a skilled mixologist will come in with a full bar cart and whip up cocktails with a side of history in the comfort of your room.
  • Look for details reminiscent of 1919, such as parquet floors, textured ceilings and pops of marble. The Oslo hotel also features stunning lamps from Norwegian designer Birger Dahl and Hadeland Glassverk.
  • Even the gym has style. Work out with modern equipment over a multi-colored wood floor while taking the lush greenery right outside the window. Afterward, take advantage of the gym’s Finnish sauna and heated mosaic beds for relaxing. The staff also has information on the best cycling and running routes.
  • The jazz club Gustav is named after Gustav Henriksen, the founder of Amerikalinjen. See a live show and have a drink Fridays and Saturdays in the intimate and comfortable space.
  • The centrally located luxury hotel sits on Jernbanetorget Square and is next to the train station, making it quick and easy to get to the airport.

The Restaurants

  • Open to guests and locals alike for breakfast and dinner, Atlas Brasserie & Café serves food with a Scandinavian bent influenced by worldwide cuisines. In the warmer months, sit in the covered courtyard or grab a table in front for an alfresco bite. Order bites such as grilled langoustines with tarragon butter, a dry-aged beef burger with aged cheddar, and mushroom ragu with smoked eggplant purée.
  • The stylish Pier 42, named after a famous Manhattan hot spot, makes the perfect place to enjoy a nightcap. The eclectic cocktail menu revolves around pairing ingredients and flavors from Norway and New York and presenting them in liquid form.
  • Grab a tea, glass of wine or small bite to eat at Haven, the hotel's cafe in an elegant, covered courtyard decked out with plants and illuminated with natural light. The cafe also acts as a permanent showroom for local designer Eikund, meaning about every piece of furniture, you see can be purchased and shipped.
  • The Little Bakery at Amerikalinjen serves its own version of the New York bagel (staff even ventured to NYC to learn from the experts). Go for a bagel tasting with spreads and toppings inside the main restaurant Atlas or take a bag to go.
