Overlooking Nybroviken, a small bay in the center of Stockholm, the elegant and historic Hotel Diplomat is an art nouveau gem in the city.
Erected in 1907 as part of King Oscar II's plan for a grand boulevard, Hotel Diplomat housed the embassies of Romania, Chile, Persia, Hungary, Italy and Canada. In 1966 it became a hotel, and the name pays homage to the ambassadors who called it home. Since then, the hotel and its 130 rooms have gotten a makeover, opening up the accommodations and shared spaces to light and minimization with an eye toward Swedish design.
Many of the guest rooms inside offer a view of the water, or the Strandvägen, a bustling boulevard on Östermalm that was built for the Stockholm World's Fair in 1897. While there, dip into the Mia Hjalmarsson spa, have a cocktail at one of the bars, savor Nordic cuisine in the restaurant and enjoy the historical yet modern setting.
- While Hotel Diplomat has been modernized, look around for touches of the past, thanks to celebrated architect Per Öberg. Artifacts and features from the former state apartments have been preserved and add to the history-meets-contemporary vibe.
- Each room features classic Scandinavian minimalism, with a signature cream, gold, green and light blue color motif.
- Visit the Mia Hjalmarsson spa for a massage, facial or cryotherapy treatment. There's also a hammam, sauna and lounge area to relax in.
- Art around the Stockholm hotel and in the rooms come from notable Swedish artists, all curated by Lovisa Malmström. Expect pieces by world-renowned artists such as David Svensson, Denise Grünstein, Anneè Olofsson, Maria Friberg and Daniel Sandberg, to name a few.
- Though salons in hotels are often a second thought, the one at Hotel Diplomat is run by the celebrated hair stylist Bo Göran Guldbrand. He has worked for fashion shows and magazines, and now you can book his expert services before going out on the town.
- Since the 1960s afternoon tea has been a big part of the luxury hotel, and even though the setting has changed, the service remains. Afternoon tea runs during the fall and through spring and includes fresh scones and pastries, finger sandwiches and the hotel's own tea blend.
- The main dining spot is The Restaurant. Here, sample seasonal Nordic cuisine from the ever-changing menu during breakfast, weekend brunch, lunch and dinner. Think dry-aged ribeye with white asparagus and ramson butter; butter-fried mackerel with roe, cress and tomato; and prawn salad laced with egg, avocado and a nobis dressing. Each item on the menu notes featured ingredients and where they were sourced.
- Get a taste of art and elegance à la Paris in the Andy Warhol-inspired Andy's Cocktail Bar. The cozy room is packed with photos, paintings, unique wallpaper, warm wooden highlights and photo-worthy drinks.
- Butiken may be the casual spot in the grand hotel, but the plates of intricate salads, expertly made coffee drinks, fresh juices and small plates prove just as luxe as the setting. Sit down for a snack, meal or glass of wine, or take local goods from the small market to go.
- With plush velvet couches and chairs, fine cocktails and excellent music curated by the hotel's own music director, on Friday and Saturdays the bar-lounge area is the place to be.
