mesm Tokyo, Autograph Collection

An artistic expression of luxury.
VERIFIED LUXURY

Welcome to Tokyo’s only luxury hotel that is devoted to the arts, mesm Tokyo, Autograph Collection. A property built by and for lovers of the performing and visual arts, mesm doesn’t have service staff, only “talent.” There’s no housekeeping, but you will have “stylists” ensuring your room is properly cared for. From the accommodations to the menus, everything here is presented with imagination and flair.

The name “mesm” comes from the word “mesmerize,” which is exactly what happens to you as soon as you walk into the lobby of the hotel. mesm is housed in a new, modern building along the Tokyo Bay waterfront. The lobby and rooms are decorated with a bespoke collection of modern art by Japanese artists. Even the talent’s uniforms are chic originals by Yohji Yamamoto.

With theatrically themed fine dining and nightly performances, you’ll be inspired and entertained at every corner of mesm.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • The luxury hotel is an ode to the arts, in ways big (such as the gallery-like public spaces) and small (like the keyboards in each room).
  • Whisk Bar has live music every night from a variety of artists playing with Tokyo Bay and the city lights as their backdrop.
  • While you’re at Whisk, make sure to try a cocktail. Inspired by the visual arts, the bar’s original drinks are an homage to famous artwork. Monet, Keith Haring, Botticelli and Hokusai are all represented in the form of alcoholic and zero-proof cocktails. Food and artisanal desserts are also featured on the creative menu.
  • Chef’s Theater, mesm’s signature restaurant, is bistronomy-style French cuisine. Noted executive chef Koki Kumamoto uses seasonal Japanese ingredients to tell stories with each dish. Consider the open kitchen your stage for the evening’s culinary performance.
  • Club mesm is a bar experience exclusive to overnight guests. Enjoy a fine Japanese-only selection of whisky, craft beers, cocktails, tea, coffee and food in an elegant lounge with an extensive terrace overlooking the bay.

The Rooms

  • Designed to inspire, the rooms are equipped with pianos (locally made Casio digital models) that have automatic play and function as Bluetooth speakers, in case you aren’t a musician. Japanese-style ink brushes and paper are perfect for bringing your ideas to life. Even the bathroom amenities sit in a case designed to look like a book.
  • All sides of mesm offer tremendous views, be it the glittering urban skyline or the waterfront vistas of Tokyo Bay and Sumida River. The latter also overlooks the ancient Hamarikyu Gardens, which are stunning in every season.
  • The chicest of all the rooms is Chapter Four, a 1,937-square-foot suite with a kitchen for private banquets prepared by the executive chef. The unit is navy with highlights of copper and yellow and is accented with artwork that uses apples as a theme.
  • In-room massages are available for guests. Oil or shiatsu treatments will help you prepare for sleep after a long day.
  • Complimentary minibars don’t consist of the usual teas and coffees; instead, mesm provides Kyoto matcha with a mini tea ceremony kit and hand-drip coffee, small treats intended to engage your senses.
