The Social Haus

Pine-scented fine dining in Montana
VERIFIED LUXURY

At The Green O’s Social Haus, executive chef Brandon Cunningham creates what the property calls "dinner theater." It's a live-fire, intimate and hands-on dining experience, complete with the sort of excellent service and refinement one expects from a restaurant that isn’t in the middle of the rugged Montana wilderness.

No matter which secluded haus (what The Green O calls its standalone cabins) you're sequestered in, the restaurant is just a short jaunt by foot — it sits in the middle of all the accommodations. While you can come here for an ever-changing breakfast and lunch, Social Haus particularly shines at dinner, when it trots out a multiple-course affair filled with local and seasonal ingredients such as huckleberries, wild chamomile, elk, Douglas fir tips and ranch-raised beef. And like you’d find at any fine-dining restaurant in a big city, each course is plated with care and flair.

Social Haus may be the only restaurant and bar at the all-inclusive, adults-only hotel, but it’s a destination unto itself.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • Inside the warm, inviting dining room, the shou sugi ban (a Japanese technique that finishes wood by charring it) accenting the space was stained to match the hue and texture of the pine trees growing right outside. This gives the feeling of being surrounded by the forest, even when indoors.
  • Choose from an array of places to take a meal and switch it up each night for a different feel. There's the inner circle bar, a small dining area, a cozy lounge and an open kitchen where you can perch and watch the chef play with fire. In warmer months, there are also alfresco dining options.
  • Cunningham comes from Portland, Oregon, where he worked closely with chef Jason French at Ned Ludd. He also perfected pasta by studying under chef Matt Sigler at Renata in Portland. His last stint was right next door at The Resort at Paws Up, where he worked with chef Sunny Jin, formerly at Napa Valley’s French Laundry and Catalonia, Spain’s El Bulli.
  • The 24 seats in the Montana restaurant are positioned to give an intimate experience. Booths by the fire seat pairs of guests side-by-side, and the outside tables make sure diners can take in the natural beauty while eating.
  • Many dishes are cooked over an open fire, giving the food that smoke-kissed essence and filling the restaurant with the comforting smell of a pine-laden campfire.

The Food

  • Dinner changes every night, but you can expect around eight courses. This may include items such as Hokkaido wagyu on toasted Japanese milk bread with caviar crème fraîche, roasted sturgeon with eggplant, puff-pastry-wrapped venison and chanterelle mushrooms, or salted milk jam crullers.
  • The dinner menu features a list of courses described in two words. For example, "chestnut and raclette" or "ham and coffee." This adds a fun mystery to the meal, and each dish will be described in more detail as it comes.
  • Change up dinner plans by ordering a special pizza straight to your haus. It's not the same experience as dining at Social Haus, but a tasty way to get a casual taste of the chef's superb food.
